Broadband - Things to consider

Are you thinking of buying a new broadband connection? If yes, then you should consider some very important things that we will discuss in the next paragraph. There are a lot of broadband service providers in the UK like British Telecommunications which has a lot of broadband schemes to offer to its British clients.

Things to consider before buying a new broadband connection

Type of service

Selecting the type of broadband connection is one of the first factors that you have to consider before buying the connection. Broadband connections in the UK are generally of two types, viz cable net connection and ADSL connection. You should compare the pros and cons of both the connections as well as the cost of the services before going for the broadband connection.

You will have to consider the type of equipment you require for the broadband connection. You will have to check with your broadband service provider as to which equipment they will provide with the package and which equipment is not provided with the package. For example some companies include the modem with package while some companies do not include the modem with the package. It is better to get the modem from your provider then to get it from outside and the companies offer are responsible for maintenance service if anything happens to their modem.

Type of plan

In the UK, the broadband service providers have limited and unlimited plans. The limited plans have a weekly or a monthly data transfer limit and the unlimited plans do not have unlimited data transfer limit. In the case of limited plans if the data transfer limit is exceeded then you have to pay additional charges for the additional mb used. In the case of unlimited plan you just have to pay a fixed amount per month.

Contract Terms

You should decide the contract terms with your broadband service provider. The contract terms are generally on an annual basis but they can also be drafted on a monthly basis if the client requires.

Payment methods

You should decide as to how you will pay for the broadband services. The most common methods are through money, cheques or credit cards.

Broadband contention ratios

You should inform the service provider as to the maximum number of subscribers who will use the broadband connection. Let's take an example. Suppose you had a 40:1 contention ratio, then 39 subscribers can use the line at a time. However the more number of users sharing bandwidth from the same line, the lesser speeds each user will get.

Additional services

Do ask your broadband service provider as to what additional features come with the package. For example many service providers will give you free email accounts with the package as well as free web space to host your own site. Many service providers also have the latest virus protection software as well as a hardware and software firewall so as to prevent the threat of viruses, intruders and hackers. Customer support and after sales service is also a very important thing to be considered in case of subscribing to a new broadband connection.
