Gas & Electricity : Why and how to switch?

Introduction

Gas and electricity supplies in the UK do not come cheap. In fact gas and electricity form a major part of the monthly household expenses in the UK. Hence it is necessary for you as a British citizen to make a comparison of the UK companies providing gas and electricity services. You can visit sites of companies providing gas and electricity services and then ponder over details like types of services offered by each one of them, along with their prices and also their network reach. The gas and electricity companies constantly try to outbid each other due to intense competition and it is the British consumer who benefits in the end.

Switching the Gas and Electricity Service

In case you want to switch your gas and electricity service, you can send in your post code to any gas and electricity valuation company. However it would be more practical to send in further details like gas and electricity bills of previous months. The company will study your usage pattern and the costs you are paying for the same and ten decide whether you need to switch over or not.

Reasons for switching

The most obvious reason for switching your existing service is the cost factor. Nearly 90 per cent of all British citizens switch their services after a few years because some other company is offering them services at a cheaper rate. Also it is very easy to switch as the new company will use the same cables and wires for providing their services to you. The other reasons of switching are moving out from the existing place to a new place. If the existing company is not providing its services in the new place then you will have to look our for a company providing services in your city.

How to switch

The process of switching your existing service is very easy. You can do a comparison of the different companies using an online calculator like the one at uSwitch.com. Once the calculator calculates the most suitable option for you, you can have a look at it and then decide to switch. Once you decide to switch your service, you fill an online form of the company and submit the completed application online. All the details in the form are processed and forwarded to the supplier. Once the supplier gets all your details, it will contact you and inform you when the new services will be installed. The whole process of switching the gas and electricity services takes 28-45 days on an average.
Your new company will also contact the old company of your order of switching the services. It cant get simpler than this. The only change will be the mention of the new company on all your future bills. You can contact your old suppler yourself to terminate the contract. Also ensure that your new company takes a final reading of the meter before switching the service so your current company can send you a final bill.
