Dental Insurance

What is dental insurance?

Dental insurance, along with other insurances in the UK has become a must to cover all the expenses related to dental treatment. It has been observed that more and more people suffer from dental carries and other dental problems due to their lifestyles and bad oral habits. Dental disease is now one of the most common diseases occurring in 95% of the British citizens and hence dental insurance assumes as much if not more importance than other types of insurance.

Difference between medical and dental insurance

Most of the medical diseases are unpredictable and can strike at anytime but most of the dental diseases are preventable. The preventive steps that can be taken by us in case of dental diseases are maintaining a good oral hygiene everyday and doing regular check ups and cleaning of the teeth. In case you make regular visits to the dentist (preferably once in six months), the problems can be diagnosed early and can be treated without any expensive procedures. As a result the cost of dental care is much less than medical care.

What does medical insurance cover?

Medical insurance primarily covers the costs of diagnosing, treating and curing diseases. The process of medical treatment includes visiting a dental physician or a dentist, conducting a variety of tests and procedures done in the laboratories and then treatments and medications provided to the patients. The insurance coverage depends on the age and attitudes of the people. However dental insurance works differently. Dental insurance covers the costs of regular preventive care of teeth. Even high quality dental care does not require as much attention as required in medical treatments. Only an x ray and a thorough check up by the dentist is enough to diagnose the problem. The dental care in normal cases is performed by a general practitioner. In certain cases, the services of the dental specialist may be required. Because most dental diseases are preventable with regular maintenance, the dental benefit plans are structured in such a way that they encourage the British citizens to get regular dental care to prevent the future onset of dental diseases. Most of the dental benefit plans require patients to assume a greater portion of the costs for treatment of dental diseases than for preventive measures.

Dental Insurance is keeping UK Healthy

As more and more British people are buying dental insurance, they get access to the regular oral maintenance. Also as more and more people are taught about the preventive care the incidence of dental decay and dental related disorders has decreased significantly.

Types of dental plans

The types of dental plans depend on a variety of factors like the alternatives offered for selecting the dentist and also the structure used to pay the fees of the dentist. The choice of dental plans also depends on the third parties which are responsible for funding the plan and also the methods by which the benefits and the payments are calculated. Hence it is necessary to take into consideration the above points for selecting your dental plan.
